I thought of Thomas Middleditch when I wrote it. He auditioned like everybody else and was great. It was important to me that the cast was believable, that they are highly intelligent and not just goofy caricatures. They had to be both funny and good actors. Nearly every actor who ended up as a series regular with the exception of Middleditch auditioned to play Erlich Bachman, the self-centered entrepreneur who runs the incubator in which Pied Piper is born.
Eventually, it was T. Miller who landed the part—or, more accurately, his silhouette. Judge told The New York Times that they were auditioning for the role in a frosted glass conference room, and when Miller walked by, just his silhouette elicited laughter.
